Age ratings are a quick place to start. Find a group that suits the youngest player, then check the player count. Each game card also shows how we rate how much work it takes to learn the rules.

Choose a family game by the youngest player

Check the youngest player’s age first, then look at the player count.

Candy Land, first published by Milton Bradley in 1949, is the base for the princess edition. Disney games for younger players are often classics like this one with new art. The Disney board games page also lists villain strategy games, rated 10 and up.

Disney board games for kids and families

Disney games for younger players tend to be classics with Disney art.

The same classic game appears in several licensed boxes. Compare them side by side to see how one idea works for a 4 year old and a 7 year old, and to make sense of the age labels.

Check the warning on the box, along with the age.

One maze, three themes

Designed by Max Kobbert and first published by Ravensburger in 1986, Labyrinth has players slide a spare tile to reshape the maze, then move toward their next target. Three licensed versions cover different ages.

Children’s TV has its own games, often starting at the youngest ages. Follow the links to see each game in the series, along with its player count, play time and age.

Bluey, Scooby-Doo and more: TV show games for kids

Children’s TV games tend to have the lowest age ratings on the site.

  • Bluey

Most Bluey games are rated 3 or 4 and up. Shadowlands recreates the game the characters play in the series.

  • Scooby-Doo

Scooby-Doo! Thrills and Spills (1999, ages 6 and up) is a race to the Mystery Machine. The line also includes classic editions rated 8 and up.

  • The Simpsons

Marvel games are often rated 14 and up, though a few are aimed at younger players. Our superhero board games guide has the full list, sorted by group size and age.

Marvel picks: superhero board games for kids

Marvel has a few games for younger fans, rated 7 or 8 and up.

Before buying a game for a small child, check the warning on the box as well as the age. Here are the two rules you’re most likely to see.

Need room for a bigger group? UNO Disney takes 10, and Loteria takes 12.

What the age on the box tells you

Two rules cover most warnings on games for young children.

  • Age ratings are recommendations

The age printed by the publisher indicates who the game suits. On its own, it does not certify that the game is safe for every child that age.

  • United States: small parts

Toys and games for children under 3 may not contain small parts that pose a choking hazard. Games for ages 3 to 6 with small parts must warn buyers not to give them to children under 3.

  • European Union: 36 months

Toys that could be dangerous for children under 36 months must carry a warning such as "Not suitable for children under 36 months", plus a brief note about the hazard.
