Westeros board game guide

Game of Thrones Risk, Game of Thrones Catan and More Board Games

Game of Thrones Risk and Game of Thrones Catan lead this list of 17 licensed games, followed by Monopoly, card games, a miniatures line and a chess set. Each entry shows the specs we could confirm and whether it follows the HBO series or the books.

Winter is coming. Game night is too. Pick your House.

Westeros made it to the table through both the novels and the HBO series, and that split explains much of this page. The heavy strategy games follow the books; Risk, Monopoly and the party-style titles follow the show. Fans of epic quests may also enjoy the Lord of the Rings board games.

Just two players? Hand of the King, the miniatures game, and the chess set all work.

Game of Thrones tabletop games, by year

Fantasy Flight led the way from 2011, with licensed classic editions following from 2015.

Just two players? Hand of the King, the miniatures game, and the chess set all work.

A game’s source gives you a sense of its characters and art. For the HBO cast, check out The Iron Throne and Funkoverse. The Fantasy Flight board game and card game follow Martin's text. The Monopoly Game of Thrones edition is based on the show.

HBO series or books: which Game of Thrones games draw from each?

Licensed games draw from either George R. R. Martin's novels or the HBO series.

Based on the HBO series

Risk, Monopoly, Clue, Funkoverse, Oathbreaker, The Iron Throne, Westeros Intrigue, The Trivia Game and the Collector's Chess Set.

Based on the books

The Board Game, The Card Game and the CMON miniatures game. Catan shares the setting, but isn't documented as a TV adaptation.

House of the Dragon

The prequel series has two licensed games so far: Monopoly: House of the Dragon Edition and Sky of Fire.

The two best-known editions adapt familiar rules, so players who know Risk or Catan can pick them up quickly. The cards below explain what changes. The Game of Thrones Catan page walks through the Wall and the Wildlings step by step.

Playing with a large group? Oathbreaker takes 5-8 players, and Risk takes up to 7.

How Risk and Catan adapt their rules for Westeros

The two best-known editions each adapt a classic game to fit the setting.

  • Risk: two boards

The Op lists two custom-designed game boards and seven finely sculpted armies.

  • Risk: three ways to play

The box includes three ways to play. Check the rules before setting up.

  • Catan: the Wall

Wildlings advance while you roll for resources, and you recruit guards to defend the Wall.

  • Catan: two ways to win

Reach ten victory points, or, if the wildlings force an early end, finish with the most guards holding their posts.

Player counts range from 1 to 8, so group size is a quick way to narrow things down. Two players have plenty of options: the miniatures game, Funkoverse and Hand of the King all work. Larger groups can browse the fantasy board games hub for more big-table picks.

Choosing a Game of Thrones game by group size

The player counts range from 1 to 8, making group size a handy place to start.

  1. Two players

A Song of Ice and Fire miniatures, Funkoverse and Hand of the King all support 2 players. The chess set is for exactly 2.

  2. Three to four players

Catan plays 3-4. The Iron Throne supports 3-5, while the Board Game supports 3-6.

  3. Five or more

Risk supports up to 7, and Oathbreaker needs 5-8. Westeros Intrigue supports up to 6.

Westeros tabletop facts

Know Catan? The Brotherhood of the Watch edition keeps the trading and adds the Wall.
