Jumanji (1995 Milton Bradley original)

  • 1995
  • 2-4 players

The original Jumanji board game was a Milton Bradley tie-in released in 1995, the same year as the film. Players race to the center while Danger cards, read through a decoder, rescue dice, and a sand timer keep things lively. Rescuers get about eight seconds.

How it plays

Roll the number die and follow your color path. Land on a blank space, draw a Danger card, and slide it under the decoder to read the message. The other players roll rescue dice before the timer runs out. Reach the center with an exact roll and call out Jumanji to win. If the Doomsday Grid fills first, everyone loses.

The film or show connection

A licensed tie-in released the same year as the film. Its Danger cards use rhymes, like the film’s verses.

Jumanji: The Game (2017 Cardinal reissue)

  • 2017

Cardinal Games reissued the 1995 game in 2017 with new colorized artwork and some updated Danger-card riddles. The core gameplay stayed the same.

How it plays

Spin Master’s classic-format Jumanji listing describes the same game loop. Roll the eight-sided number die, draw a danger card, and use the decoder to read the secret message. Your fellow players race the clock to rescue you. If the Doomsday Grid fills up, everyone loses. The first player to reach the center and yell Jumanji wins.

The film or show connection

It came out the year Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle hit theaters, but it updates the 1995 game rather than adapting that film. In the film, the board game becomes a video game.

Jumanji Deluxe Game (electronic Green Dome)

  • 2021
  • 2-4 players
  • Ages 8+

The Jumanji Deluxe board game turns the game into a cooperative challenge. Its electronic Green Dome plays the drums of Jumanji and reveals riddles and events from 100 Challenges.

How it plays

Roll dice and move along the path, then use the electronic Green Dome to reveal a riddle or perilous event. Each player starts with 3 Life Tokens. If anyone runs out, everyone loses. To win as a group, reach the center with at least one Life Token left per player and yell Jumanji.

The film or show connection

Spin Master’s description nods to both the Robin Williams original and the Dwayne Johnson films, comparing the feel to Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level. It doesn’t name specific film characters.

  • 2-4 players
  • Ages 6+

This card covers Spin Master’s current classic Jumanji, listed by the maker as the 30th Anniversary Edition with updated jungle challenges. Some retailers describe wooden-box versions, but Spin Master doesn’t publish wooden-box specifications. The figures here come from its 30th Anniversary listing.

How it plays

Roll dice and move along the path, then use the center decoder to reveal a riddle. Solve it with your dice to move on. The first player to reach the center and yell Jumanji wins. The box lists a gameboard, four plastic movers, a sand timer, a number die, four rescue dice, 30 danger cards, and a card decoder.

The film or show connection

Spin Master calls it the latest edition of the legendary board game, based on the action-comedy movie.

    Jumanji games by year

Jumanji started as a picture book in 1981, followed by several real board game versions since 1995.

For the original feel, look for the 1995 game or the 2017 reissue.

Four of the five playable versions are compared below. The 1995 and 2017 boxes share a timer-and-decoder design. Spin Master’s Deluxe electronic game makes Jumanji cooperative, with life tokens. The Jumanji Deluxe board game takes the clearest departure from the original.

Jumanji 1995 vs 2017 vs Deluxe: what changed

Four of the five playable versions appear here. The collector replica has its own section below.

    1995 Milton Bradley

The 1995 manual covers 2 to 4 players, with a special rule for two. The box includes a gameboard with a card decoder, Danger cards, four rescue dice, a number die, a timer, a rhino figure, and pawns for up to four players.

    2017 Cardinal reissue

It follows the same structure as the 1995 game, with colorized artwork and updated Danger-card messages. Spin Master’s classic-format listing includes 30 danger cards, four rescue dice, an eight-sided number die, a decoder, and a sand timer.

    Deluxe electronic (2021)

Cooperative game for 2-4 players, ages 8+. Includes an electronic dome, 100 Challenge Cards, 12 Life Tokens, four rhino movers, two regular dice, four challenge dice, and a sand timer. Three AA batteries are included.

    Spin Master 30th Anniversary Edition

The current classic edition plays 2-4 players, ages 6+. The box has a gameboard, four plastic movers, a sand timer, a number die, four rescue dice, 30 Danger cards and a card decoder.

The steps below follow the 1995 instruction manual, since most searches for Jumanji board game rules are about this edition. The 2017 version keeps the same structure, while the Deluxe electronic game has different rules. Spin Master’s current classic edition has its own page, Jumanji wooden-box edition.

For teamwork, try the cooperative Deluxe electronic edition.

Jumanji board game rules: how the 1995 and 2017 versions play

These steps come from the 1995 instruction manual. Spin Master's classic-format edition uses the same structure, while the Deluxe electronic game has different rules.

    1. Roll and move

Roll the number die and move your pawn along your color path toward the board's center.

    2. Read the space

The board has four kinds of spaces. Land on a blank space to draw a Danger card. A Wait for 5 or 8 space sends you back until someone rolls a 5 or 8. On a Jungle space, every player is trapped, and everyone rolls to rescue each other. On a Rhino space, use the rhino to block another player.

    3. Draw a Danger card

Slide the card under the decoder, read its message aloud, then reveal the secret symbol and number.

    4. Rescue before time runs out

Flip the timer. Your fellow players roll their rescue dice at the same time, looking for the matching symbol or the wild hourglass. They have about 8 seconds. If everyone succeeds, they move ahead by the number on the card. If anyone misses, put the card on the next empty space of the Doomsday Grid.

    5. Win or lose together

Reach the center with an exact roll and call out Jumanji. If the Doomsday Grid fills first, the jungle overwhelms everyone and all players lose. In a two-player game, the hourglass is not wild.

The riddle is what many people remember about Jumanji, but it works differently on screen and on the table. In the film, a rhyme appears in a glass orb. The 1995 game hides rhymes in Danger cards, while the Deluxe edition uses an electronic dome. For the film’s look, read about the Jumanji board game replica next.

How Jumanji riddles work in the film and games

The film's riddles and the games' riddles are connected, but they aren't the same.

    • In the film

A rhyme tells players what comes next. Alan Parrish quotes one: In the jungle, you must wait, until the dice read 5 or 8.

    • In the 1995 game

Danger cards have rhymes that you read through the decoder. The manual gives this example: When you see it you will shake; it is big and green and rhymes with lake. The answer is a snake, and the secret symbol is a saber.

    • In the Deluxe game

The electronic Green Dome reveals a riddle or perilous event from its 100 Challenges. Spin Master's description doesn't give the full wording.

Collector pieces look most like the film prop, but only one also plays as a game. Check the size and material before buying: the replica is composite, not wood. For display, the Mini Prop Electronic Board is the smaller option.

Jumanji board game replicas and collector pieces

Collectors have two options: one is a playable game, and the other is a display prop.

    • Collector Replica

The Noble Collection's full-scale replica measures about 16 x 11 x 4 inches closed and is made of ABS composite. It includes totems, dice and playing cards for 2-4 players, ages 14+.

    • Mini Prop Electronic Board

This board measures about 18 x 25.5 x 1.5 cm when open. It has a light-up logo and the drum theme, plus miniature totems and dice, but no gameplay.
