Harry Potter Board Games: Card Games, Hogwarts Battle and Classic Editions

Harry Potter tabletop games fit three broad groups: The Op’s strategy games, licensed classics like Monopoly and Clue, and collectibles such as chess sets and a retired trading card game. For more games in the genre, the fantasy board games hub covers other franchises, too. First up: where to begin.

For a team effort, try Hogwarts Battle or Death Eaters Rising. Both are cooperative.

Licensed Harry Potter games came in waves: card and roll-and-move games in the early 2000s, followed by The Op’s deck-builders from 2016. Fans of cooperative play can check the Lord of the Rings board games to see how another fantasy film series approached it.

Harry Potter tabletop games by year

Licensed Harry Potter tabletop games began in 2001 and gained momentum after Hogwarts Battle arrived in 2016.

For a team effort, try Hogwarts Battle or Death Eaters Rising. Both are cooperative.

Three strategy games share a publisher and theme, so they’re easy to confuse. These notes sort them by player count and whether players work together or compete. Before buying, remember that Hogwarts Battle Defence Against the Dark Arts comes in its own box, not as an add-on.

Just two players? Defence Against the Dark Arts is designed for exactly two.

Hogwarts Battle, Defence Against the Dark Arts and Death Eaters Rising

The Op Games makes three Harry Potter strategy games that are easy to mix up.

Hogwarts Battle

A cooperative deck-builder for 2-4 players, ages 11+. Play a seven-game campaign as Harry, Ron, Hermione, or Neville. Two expansions add content.

Defence Against the Dark Arts

A standalone duel for exactly 2 players. It’s another deck-builder, this time competitive, and it doesn’t combine with the cooperative game.

Death Eaters Rising

A cooperative dice and card game for 2-4 players, 45-60 minutes. Set during Order of the Phoenix, it pits you against Voldemort.

Some Harry Potter games use rules you may already know. Familiar classics with a new theme can suit mixed groups and younger players. Quiz fans can browse the wider set of movie trivia games, too, after seeing how each Hogwarts edition adapts the original.

How the Hogwarts editions change classic games

Six classics get Hogwarts-specific rules or components.

  • Monopoly

House points replace money, and you collect crests by completing color sets. The game ends once every location has been explored.

  • Clue

Secret passages, changing doors, and the Dark Mark reshape Hogwarts. Make your accusation in Dumbledore’s office.

  • Scrabble

Wizarding words count, and landing on a Hogwarts space lets you draw a card that can change the scoring.

  • UNO

Play a Sorting Hat card and choose someone to draw until they find a Gryffindor card.

  • Trivial Pursuit

House mascots move around the board, and the Ultimate Edition includes 1,800 questions from all eight films.

  • Jenga

A house marker climbs the stairs toward the classroom as a custom die determines which blocks move.

Chess is the Harry Potter game most readers already know how to play. The sets differ in what you get: a retired Mattel set, a LEGO build and a Noble Collection display piece. Collectors comparing them may also want to check the Game of Thrones chess set.

Harry Potter chess sets: Mattel, LEGO and Noble Collection

All three recreate the giant chess game from the first film, though each set has its own look and feel.

  • Mattel (2002)

The first licensed set has 32 replica pieces. Mattel discontinued it in 2005, so finding one means hunting secondhand.

  • LEGO 76392 (2021)

The set has 32 buildable pieces, plus minifigures of Harry, Hermione, Ron and golden Snape. LEGO lists it as retired.

  • The Noble Collection

This licensed set has 32 detailed pieces and a board that recalls the film scene. It was listed in stock on the UK store when researched.
