How we rate

You only need to recognize Gryffindor from the wizarding world. The cards take it from there.

A round of Harry Potter UNO follows regular UNO, so there isn’t much to cover. The only twist is the Sorting Hat card, explained further down. For a longer game night, the Harry Potter board games page has more options.

Call UNO as you play your next-to-last card.

A quick look at one round of Harry Potter UNO

A round ends when someone runs out of cards. Here’s how to play one round with any number of players.

Play Sorting Hat and a rival draws until they get a Gryffindor card.

  1. Step 1:

Each player draws a card. The highest number deals; a symbol counts as zero. The dealer shuffles and deals 7 cards to each player.

  2. Step 2:

Set the rest of the deck face down as the draw pile, then flip its top card to start the discard pile.

  3. Step 3:

The player left of the dealer goes first. On your turn, play a card that matches the top discard by number, color or symbol.

  4. Step 4:

If you can’t match, draw one card. You may play it right away if it fits. Otherwise, your turn is over.

  5. Step 5:

Action cards change the turn: Draw Two, Reverse, Skip, Wild, Wild Draw Four and Wild Sorting Hat.

  6. Step 6:

Play the Wild Sorting Hat to pick another player. They draw until they get a Gryffindor card, and you choose the color that continues play.

  7. 7Step 7:

When you play your next-to-last card, call UNO. If someone catches you before the next player starts their turn, draw two cards.

  8. 8Step 8:

The first player out of cards scores points for the cards left in opponents’ hands. The first to reach 500 points wins.

Mattel’s instruction sheet covers everything from setup to scoring. The next section explains dealing, action cards and the Wild Draw Four challenge, a common source of arguments. Prefer a board to cards? Try Hogwarts Battle.

Harry Potter UNO rules, explained

Setup

  1. Each player draws a card; whoever gets the highest number deals. A card with a symbol counts as zero.

  2. The dealer shuffles and deals 7 cards to each player.

  3. Put the remaining deck face down to make the draw pile.

  4. Flip the top card of the draw pile to start the discard pile. If it’s an action card, follow the sheet’s instructions for that card.

  5. The player to the dealer’s left starts.

Turn by turn

  • Play a card or draw

Match a card from your hand to the top discard by number, color or symbol. If nothing matches, draw one card; you may play it. You can also hold back a playable card, but then you must draw and can’t play another card afterward.

  • Draw Two, Reverse, and Skip

Draw Two makes the next player draw 2 cards and miss a turn. Reverse switches the direction of play, while Skip makes the next player lose a turn. Play each card only on a matching color or another card of the same kind.

  • Wild and Wild Draw Four

A Wild lets you choose the color, even if you have another playable card. Wild Draw Four also makes the next player draw 4 cards and lose a turn. You can play it only if you have no card matching the color in play.

  • Wild Sorting Hat

Choose another player. They draw from the draw pile until they get a Gryffindor card. The Sorting Hat is also a wild, so you choose the color that resumes play. If it starts the discard pile, the player to the dealer's left chooses the color.

  • Calling UNO

Yell UNO as you play your next-to-last card. If another player catches you before the next player starts their turn, draw two cards.

End of the game and scoring

When a player runs out of cards, the round ends. They score points for cards left in opponents' hands: number cards are worth face value; Draw Two, Reverse and Skip are worth 20 each; Wild, Wild Draw Four and Sorting Hat are worth 50 each. Add scores across rounds. The first player to reach 500 wins. With the alternative method, players tally their own leftover points, and the lowest total wins once someone reaches 500.

Key rules

  • Challenging a Wild Draw Four

If you think someone played a Wild Draw Four illegally on you, you can challenge. The challenged player shows you their hand. If they’re guilty, they draw the 4 cards. If they’re innocent, you draw 6 cards: the 4 plus 2 more.

  • Last Card Is a Draw Card

If the final card of a round is a Draw Two or Wild Draw Four, the next player still draws 2 or 4 cards. Those cards count when points are totaled.

  • Empty Draw Pile

If the draw pile runs out before anyone goes out, reshuffle the discard pile and keep playing.

  • Starting Card Rules

If a Skip turns up at the start, the player to the dealer's left loses a turn. A Reverse makes the dealer go first, then play moves to the right. Return a Wild Draw Four to the deck and draw another card.

Tips for your first game

  • Save Wild cards for when you’re stuck instead of playing them early.
  • Call UNO as you play your next-to-last card. If someone catches you before the next turn, you draw two cards.
  • Hold Wild Draw Four until you have no card in the color in play, or you could face a challenge.
  • Before the first hand, agree on whether to play to 500 using standard or alternative scoring.

You can play Wild Draw Four only if you have no card of the color in play.

This is a licensed deck, not a new game, so there’s not much of a design story. The section below covers Mattel’s changes, the Sorting Hat card’s connection to the story and what’s in the box.

The game and its wizarding-world background

Wild, Wild Draw Four, and Sorting Hat each score 50.

The game

  • Design and Release

Mattel published UNO Harry Potter as product FNC42, and the instruction sheet has a 2018 copyright. This licensed version of UNO uses Harry Potter artwork and adds a Sorting Hat card, but no new set of rules.

  • What Changed From Standard UNO

The deck has 112 cards, including 4 Wild Sorting Hat cards. The scoring table, action cards, and Wild Draw Four challenge follow the standard UNO instruction sheet.

The film or series it covers

The Harry Potter series and wizarding world, rather than one film or book.

At Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat places students into houses. Its card effect names Gryffindor, Harry Potter's house, as the card the chosen player must find.
