Jaws Board Game: How the Two Acts Work
The Jaws Board Game from Ravensburger (2019) is a one-versus-many game for 2 to 4 players aged 12 and up. One player secretly controls the shark; the others play Brody, Hooper, and Quint, hunting it across Amity Island before the showdown aboard the Orca.

You’re gonna need a bigger board. Act 1 is the hunt; Act 2 is the fight.
The game has two very different parts: Act 1 is a secret-movement chase, and Act 2 is a dice fight. What happens in Act 1 determines what each side brings to Act 2. Follow the steps below in order. For other options, see the Jaws board games page.
The shark records every move on the tracker pad.
A quick look at the Jaws Board Game’s two acts
A full game has two acts. The bullets below cover them in order.
Only floating barrels trigger motion sensors.
- Step 1:
Act 1, event phase: Reveal an Amity Event card, place swimmer tokens on the beaches shown, then read the event aloud and follow its instructions.
- Step 2:
Act 1, shark phase: The shark secretly moves through the water, eats swimmers and records each move on the tracker pad. Then it tells the crew how many swimmers it ate and where.
- Step 3:
Act 1, crew phase: Brody, Hooper and Quint move, rescue swimmers, search for the shark and carry barrels. Quint launches barrels at spaces where he thinks the shark is hiding.
- Step 4:
Act 1 ends when two barrels hit the shark or it eats enough swimmers. The swimmer count carries over into Act 2.
- Step 5:
Act 2, steps 1 and 2: Three resurface cards show possible spots. The shark secretly picks one and may play an ability card.
- Step 6:
Act 2, steps 3 and 4: The crew moves, chooses weapons and places target tokens where they expect the shark to be. Then the shark reveals its spot.
- 7Step 7:
Act 2, steps 5 and 6: Crew members who guessed correctly attack. The shark then attacks the Orca or a crew member in the water, and dives.
The overview skips who does what and when each act ends. Here, each role gets its own turn rules. The shark and crew play differently, and the end-of-act triggers can trip up first-time players. For more hidden-role chases, visit the horror board games hub.
Jaws board game rules, made clear
Setup
Act 1 setup: Place the board with the Amity Island side up. Shuffle the Amity Event cards facedown beside it and set the swimmer tokens nearby.
One player is the shark. The others play Brody, Quint and Hooper, each with a character board. In a two-player game, one player controls all three crew members.
Quint starts aboard the Orca with two barrels; the rest go at the Shop. Brody takes his Binoculars and Beach Closed tokens, while Hooper takes his Fish Finder.
The shark sets its board to 0 on the swimmer track and takes the shark mover. It stays off the board in Act 1. The shark secretly chooses a starting water space and writes it on the tracker pad.
Turn by turn
Act 1: The shark’s turn
The shark moves through water spaces, never diagonally or over land, and eats swimmers, recording everything on the tracker pad. At the end, it reveals how many swimmers it ate and where, along with which floating barrels it passed.
Act 1: Brody’s turn
Brody moves on land, rescues swimmers, carries one barrel at a time from the Shop to a dock, and closes an empty beach. With his Binoculars, he can ask whether the shark is in the water at that beach.
Act 1: Hooper
Hooper zips around by boat, rescuing swimmers and collecting barrels. His Fish Finder tells him if the shark is in his space, next to it, or somewhere else. He can hand barrels to Quint when they share a space.
Act 1: Quint
Quint pilots the Orca, rescues swimmers, and collects barrels. Once per round, he can launch a barrel into his space or an adjacent water space. If the shark is there, the barrel attaches. If not, it stays afloat.
Act 2: The Shark Picks a Spot
Draw three resurface cards, each showing a zone, an evade number, and attack dice. The shark secretly chooses one and may play one ability card with it. The crew sees the three possible spots, but not the shark’s pick.
Act 2: Crew Attacks
Each crew member chooses a weapon and target space. Only crew who guessed the shark’s spot can attack. Melee and firearm weapons roll dice; hits above the shark’s evade number cause wounds. Attachable weapons don’t need a roll.
Act 2: The Shark Attacks
The shark can attack the Orca, rolling dice to damage or destroy a boat tile, or attack a crew member in the water. Anyone on a damaged tile falls into the water. Then the shark dives, and a new round begins.
End of the game and scoring
Act 1 ends when a second barrel attaches to the shark or the swimmer track fills. The shark’s final position determines how many ability cards it gets and how many extra gear cards the crew gets for Act 2. In Act 2, the crew wins by eliminating the shark with wounds. The shark wins if all three crew members are eliminated or every boat tile is destroyed.
Key rules
Hidden Movement
The shark records every move on the tracker pad and keeps its position secret unless a crew action forces it to reveal. Binoculars, Fish Finder, and barrel launches are the crew’s only ways to locate it.
Motion Sensors
A floating barrel triggers a motion sensor when the shark enters its space. At the end of its turn, the shark tells the crew which sensors went off, but not the order. Barrels on docks or boats do nothing.
Predicting the Surfacing
In Act 2, the crew can discuss plans only after the shark locks in its choice. The Chum card makes the shark reveal one resurface token it didn’t choose.
Attachable Weapons
Attachable weapons stay on the shark and keep working. The shark drops them only if it chooses a resurface card with the Shake Off symbol.
Playing One Act Alone
Either act works as a shorter game. In a standalone Act 1, the shark wins if the swimmer track reaches 7. In a standalone Act 2, the shark starts with six random ability cards, and the crew starts with seven gear cards.
Tips for your first game
- Teach the shark player first. The tracker pad and the order of the shark’s turn are the bits most likely to need a walkthrough.
- As the crew, use Fish Finder and Binoculars together. A negative answer still helps, since it rules out whole areas of the sea.
- Launch barrels early. Even a missed barrel can float around as a tripwire.
- In Act 2, spread out your target tokens when you can. The crew attacks only if its guess is right.
In Act 2, only crew members who guess the shark’s spot can attack.
The rules explain how to play, but the game retells one film. This section looks at what the box borrows from the 1975 movie, from the beach attacks to the barrels and final fight aboard the Orca, and explains the crew’s roles.

The game
Design and Release
Ravensburger released the Jaws strategy game in 2019 as a 2 to 4 player game for ages 12 and up. It takes about 60 minutes to play and follows the film’s story.
Editions and Reprints
The Ravensburger box is the only Jaws game with these rules. Other Jaws games include The Game of Jaws and an Operation edition, but each has its own rules and isn’t an edition of this one.
The film or series it covers
Jaws, the 1975 film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel.
Act 1 follows the shark attacks on Amity’s beaches and the crew’s search, using floating barrels to track the shark. Act 2 is the final showdown aboard Quint’s boat, the Orca. The three crew roles are Chief Martin Brody, Matt Hooper and Quint.
Scenes and story beats in the game
- 1
Brody closes a beach to protect swimmers. It’s a board action on the Amity Island side.
- 2
Barrels float to help track the shark. They also serve as hits and motion sensors in the game.
- 3
Quint pilots the Orca as Brody and Hooper hunt the shark alongside him.
- 4
The final fight aboard the sinking Orca takes place in Act 2.
