Is your Pokémon an Electric type? Ask a smart question, flip fast, and guess when you’re sure.
Guess Who? is quick to learn, so your first round takes just a few steps. The bullets below follow the order of play; the sections afterward explain scoring and the finer points. For a Pokémon game with more building and trading, Pokemon Master Trainer is a bigger step up.
Choose the same character sheet before you start.
Quick Guide: one round of Pokémon Guess Who
A round takes a few minutes. Both players pick a secret Pokémon, then take turns asking questions until someone guesses correctly.
Ask yes-or-no questions that close lots of doors.
- Step 1:
Choose a character sheet together, then slide one into each frame.
- Step 2:
Tilt your frame forward to open every Pokémon’s door.
- Step 3:
Each player secretly chooses a mystery Pokémon with the selector frame.
- Step 4:
The youngest player goes first.
- Step 5:
On your turn, ask one yes-or-no question about the other player’s Pokémon.
- Step 6:
Close the doors on all Pokémon that don’t match the answer.
- 7Step 7:
Think you know the answer? Make a guess instead of asking a question.
- 8Step 8:
Guess right and you win the round. Guess wrong and you lose it.
The Pokémon edition uses the same frame-and-sheet format as Hasbro's current Guess Who?, so the same instructions apply. Here’s the setup, how turns work, and how to make a guess. For a faster card game in the same franchise, try Pokemon UNO.
How to play Guess Who Pokemon edition: full rules
Setup
Unlatch the two frames and pull them apart.
Choose a character sheet together. Both players need the same one.
Open your frame and slide the sheet behind the tabs inside the front panel.
Tilt your frame forward until every door opens. Then open the back panel until it locks, and stand the frame in front of you.
Flip the selector frame up or down and slide it left or right to choose your mystery Pokémon. Keep your pick secret.
Turn by turn
Who goes first?
The youngest player takes the first turn. After that, players alternate. Each turn is one question or one guess.
Ask a yes-or-no question
Ask about the other player’s mystery Pokemon, such as whether it’s a certain type. They must answer yes or no, and nothing else.
Close the doors
After the answer, close every door for a Pokemon that doesn’t fit. If the answer is yes, close the ones that don’t match. If it’s no, close the ones that do.
Make a guess
Think you know the other player’s Pokemon? Name it instead of asking a question. Guess right and you win the round. Guess wrong and you lose it.
End of the game and scoring
A round ends when someone guesses correctly or gets it wrong. Hasbro’s instructions also offer a longer series: win five rounds to be the ultimate guesser, sliding the score tracker forward after each win. A product description for the Pokemon edition describes the same race to five.
Key rules
Yes or no only
Answers are always a plain yes or no. That keeps questions focused, so asking about a trait shared by several Pokemon is usually smarter than naming just one.
Same sheet for both players
Both players use the same character sheet. Each sheet is double-sided, so the box has 48 Pokemon across two sheets.
One question per turn
Each turn gives you one question or one guess, not both. Then the other player asks you something.
A wrong guess loses
A wrong guess costs you the round, so take that risk only when you’re sure.
Keep your score
Use the score tracker on the frame to count your round wins toward five.
Tips for your first game
- Ask about a trait that splits the sheet roughly in half, such as type or color, so each answer closes plenty of doors.
- Wait until one door is left to guess, or until you’re confident. A wrong guess ends the round.
- Choose a sheet together before you start. The best questions depend on which Pokemon it shows.
- For a longer session, play to five rounds and use the score tracker to keep count.
A wrong guess costs you the round, so make sure you’re right.
