Oh. My. God. Who spilled the secret? The tokens below hold clues.

Friends Clue follows the classic Clue loop. The quick round below uses Hasbro’s published rules, then covers the cards and abilities in the Friends box. Once you know the rhythm, the Friends board games list shows what else the show has inspired.
Mark your own cards first. Anything in your hand can’t be in the envelope.
Quick explainer: a round of Friends Clue
CLUE: Friends is a themed take on the classic mystery game. A round follows the steps below from Hasbro’s instructions, with the last bullet covering what the Friends box adds.
Include one or two of your own cards in a suggestion to test a neighbor’s hand.
- Step 1:
Your goal is to find out which secret is being kept, who reveals it and where in New York it comes out. Classic Clue asks who, with what and where.
- Step 2:
Each player takes one of the six friends (Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey or Ross) and an identification card with an ability.
- Step 3:
In classic setup, one card of each kind goes unseen into the envelope, and the rest are dealt out. The envelope holds the answer.
- Step 4:
On your turn, roll the dice and head toward a room. In classic Clue, move up to the number rolled, never diagonally, and enter through a doorway.
- Step 5:
In a room, suggest a suspect, a weapon and the room you’re in. Move the suspect and weapon into that room.
- Step 6:
The player to your left secretly shows you one matching card. If they have none, the next player checks, and so on around the table.
- 7Step 7:
Mark the card you saw on your sheet; it can’t be in the envelope. If nobody can show a card, your suggestion might be right.
- 8Step 8:
Think you know the answer? Make an accusation and check the envelope in secret. If you’re right, you win. If you’re wrong, you lose your turns but still show cards.
- 9Step 9:
The Friends box adds Gossip cards with instant effects, like moving anywhere or taking an extra turn, plus one-use abilities on the identification cards.
Every Clue edition follows the same basic setup: a hidden answer, a notepad for tracking eliminations, and one accusation. The sections below explain those steps and what the Friends box adds. More interested in the show than deduction? Try Friends Scene It?, which focuses more on the series.
How Friends Clue plays: classic rules, with Friends extras
Setup
Classic setup, according to Hasbro’s instructions: place all six character tokens on their starting spaces, even with fewer than six players, and put the weapons in separate rooms.
Sort the character, weapon and room cards into three piles. Put the top card from each pile into the envelope without looking. Those three cards are the answer.
Shuffle the remaining cards together and deal them all out. Some players may get more cards than others.
Each player secretly checks their cards and marks them on a notepad sheet. Cards in your hand can’t be in the envelope.
The Friends box has Rumor cards for characters, secrets and locations, matching the three classic piles. Each player also takes one of six identification cards.
Turn by turn
Roll and move (classic rules)
Roll the dice and move up to the number shown. No diagonal moves, passing through the same square twice in a turn, or landing on or crossing an occupied square, including doorways. You can enter a room without an exact roll. If a room has a secret passage, you can use it at the start of your turn.
Make a suggestion (classic rules)
When you reach or stay in a room, suggest a suspect, a weapon and that room. Move the suspect and weapon into it. The player to your left shows you one matching card if they have one; otherwise, the next player checks.
Use your identification card
Each friend’s card lists an ability and flips over after use. Monica may roll again after her first move to move twice. Phoebe may propose two Plans on the same turn.
Draw a Gossip card
Gossip cards have a question mark on the back and a short effect on the front. The publisher’s photos show Ross’s Pivot card, which lets you move anywhere and play it right away, and a We Were on a Break card that gives you an extra turn.
End of the game and scoring
Like in classic Clue, you get one accusation per game, on your turn. Name a suspect, a weapon, and a room, then check the envelope in secret. Get all three right and you win. Miss, and you put the cards back and take no more turns, though you still show cards to other players. Clue: Friends replaces the murder with a secret: which secret, who reveals it, and where.
Key rules
The same size puzzle as classic Clue
Classic Clue has 6 suspects, 6 weapons, and 9 rooms. Clue: Friends has six characters, six secret tokens, and nine board locations, so the deduction puzzle has the same shape.
Nine board locations
The board features Apartment 19, Apartment 20, the Hallway, the Hospital, Ross’s Apartment, Phoebe’s Apartment, Central Perk, Monica’s Parents’ House, and the Balcony.
Secret passages
Board notes connect Apartment 19 to the Balcony and Apartment 20 to Central Perk. In classic Clue, you can use a passage at the start of your turn.
One-use abilities
Monica’s card lets her move twice, rolling again after the first move. Phoebe’s lets her propose two Plans in one turn. Each works once per game, then you flip the card over.
Tips for your first game
- Mark your own cards first. Anything in your hand can’t be in the envelope.
- Include one or two of your own cards in a suggestion to find out if a neighbor has a specific card.
- Save your identification ability for when it matters. It works only once per game.
Gossip cards can say Move Anywhere, so keep an eye on where rivals might jump.
Friends Clue builds its case around storylines, not quiz questions. Each secret token points to a plot point, and the locations are familiar to fans. To compare it with quiz-style games, browse the Friends board games list.
The game and the sitcom
Monica and Phoebe’s abilities work once per game, so use them wisely.
The game
Design and release
The Op Games publishes Clue: Friends under the Clue brand, owned by Hasbro. The cards have a 2022 Hasbro copyright and a Warner Bros. Entertainment notice. The store listing dates to July 2022, and Apartment Therapy covered the game as new in August 2022.
Editions and reprints
Clue goes by Cluedo in the UK. This edition is sold as CLUE: Friends, with the subtitle The One with the Secrets.
The film or series it covers
The game covers the whole series, with no single season. Its secrets come from show storylines, and the board features nine settings.
You play as the six main characters, and the board is a collage of show stills across nine locations, from Central Perk to Monica’s parents’ house. The Op sets the case around a secret that’s bound to come out, not a crime.

- 1
Monica’s nickname for Chandler, Mister Big (the phone token and its secret card)

Ross being put on sabbatical at work (the turkey Moist-Maker sandwich)
