This game needs a DVD player and remote, so one player takes the DVD Master role. Here’s how a turn runs, from the first roll to the All Play to Win finale. For a screen-free quiz, Friends Trivial Pursuit comes in a wedge-shaped box.

In a hurry? Race to Central Perk takes about 30 minutes.

Quick explainer: one round of Scene It? Friends: The DVD Game

On your turn, roll, move, and take on a challenge. Only the challenge winner keeps rolling.

For classic rules, Monopoly and Clue stick to the standard format.

  1. Step 1:

Set the board where everyone can see the TV, then hand the remote to the DVD Master.

  2. Step 2:

Roll both dice. The numbered die moves your piece; the category die sets your challenge.

  3. Step 3:

My Play is a DVD challenge for you alone. In All Play, everyone can shout out an answer.

  4. Step 4:

For a Trivia Card challenge, another player reads you a Friends question from the card box.

  5. Step 5:

Buzz Cards can help you or trip up a rival. Player's Choice lets you choose a challenge.

  6. Step 6:

Win a challenge, then roll both dice again and take another turn.

  7. 7Step 7:

Win a challenge on a Central Perk space, and your next move counts double.

  8. 8Step 8:

Land on All Play to Win. Win the All Play to take the game; lose, and head for the Final Cut rings.

The full rules combine dice, DVD challenges, trivia cards, and a two-stage ending. Everything below comes from Mattel's instruction sheet. The quick explainer above covers the basics; the key rules break down the Central Perk space and Final Cut rings. Prefer cards over screens? Try UNO Friends.

How to play Scene It? Friends: The DVD Game: the full rules

Setup

  1. Set up the Flextime board so everyone can see the TV. Fully extend it for longer games, or fold it into a circle for shorter play.

  2. Choose a mover and place it on Start.

  3. Put the round Buzz Cards on the Buzz circle, then set the trivia card box and dice beside the board. Give each player a Category Reference Card.

  4. Insert the DVD and let the intro run to the Main Menu. Then choose a DVD Master to operate the remote.

  5. In Timer Settings, pick 10, 20, or 30 seconds for trivia answers. The default is 30 seconds.

  6. Select Play the Game from the Main Menu. Everyone rolls the numbered die; the highest roll goes first.

Turn by turn

  • Roll and move

Roll both dice, then move the number of spaces shown on the six-sided numbered die. Movers can share a space. You always move at the start of your turn.

  • Take on the challenge

Take the challenge shown on the eight-sided category die: DVD challenge, Trivia Card, Buzz Card or Player's Choice.

  • My Play and All Play

In My Play, only the roller answers. Get it right and roll again. In All Play, everyone can shout out an answer. If the roller wins, they roll again. If another player wins, that player moves one space or makes someone draw a Buzz Card.

  • Trivia Card challenges

Another player draws a card and reads the question while the DVD Master starts the Timer. The categories are The One with the Details (who, what, when, where or why), The One with all the Dialogue and The One with the Pop Culture.

  • Buzz Cards

Draw a Buzz Card and follow its instructions right away. Some cards can be saved and played against a rival before their turn starts, but not after they roll. Buzz Cards can't be played against anyone on a Final Cut ring.

End of the game and scoring

Reach the end of the path and stop on Stop: All Play to Win. Everyone takes part in an All Play to Win challenge. If the roller wins, they win the game. If not, they move to the outer Final Cut ring, marked 3, and try again next turn. In Final Cut, answer as many questions as your ring number. Miss one and move in one ring.

Key rules

  • Central Perk space

Win a challenge while on a Central Perk space, and your next roll moves you twice the number shown on the numbered die.

  • All Play to Win

When another player wins this challenge, they can make an opponent draw a Buzz Card or move their own piece forward three spaces. Players on a Final Cut ring are exempt.

  • Final Cut

Final Cut has three rings. Answer as many questions as your ring number: three on the outer ring, down to one. Miss on ring 1 and you stay there until your next turn.

  • Longer games

For a longer, more competitive game, roll the numbered die and move only after answering a question correctly.

  • Party Play

Choose Party Play from the Main Menu to run puzzlers and clips one after another without using the remote. Press RETURN to go back to the regular game.

Tips for your first game

  • To avoid repeated clips, choose Pre-set Gameplay on the Main Menu. Random mode can repeat clips.
  • Each clip has several questions, so stay sharp even if you've seen it before.
  • Pick a DVD Master who doesn't mind watching the screen more than the board.
  • For a harder game, set the Timer to 10 or 20 seconds.
