How we rate

The rules are light, but the questions and the Unagi, Janice and How You Doin’ challenges favor players who know the show well.

This is the most rule-heavy Friends trivia game, so it helps to read through a turn before opening the box. The steps below take you from the first roll to Paradise Pond. For a lighter game, Friends Trivial Pursuit is a one-die quiz with no board.

Keep won cards on the table with their colors showing. The Rainbow Rule needs all six.

Quick explainer: a round of Friends Wicked Wango Quiz

A turn starts with a die roll and a question. The first player to pick the Paradise Pond card wins.

Wicked Wango and Speed Round cards count as any color for the Rainbow.

  1. Step 1:

Place your colored dot mover just left of the F card on the Ladder of Chance. The player with the best wildlife encounter story goes first.

  2. Step 2:

Roll the die. It can show a question, the Wheel of Mayhem, an Angel Pass, or a surprise.

  3. Step 3:

For a question, the player to your right draws a card from your zone’s deck and reads it aloud.

  4. Step 4:

Answer correctly to keep the card and move forward. Get it wrong, and the card goes to that zone’s discard pile and your turn ends.

  5. Step 5:

The Wheel of Mayhem adds a challenge to a question: Oxygen, Backwards, Out of Tune, Unagi, Janice or How You Doin’.

  6. Step 6:

Before your first jump over the D card, hand over a Rainbow, made up of won cards showing all six colors on their backs.

  7. 7Step 7:

Past the S card is Paradise Pond. On your next turn, another player holds up four cards for you to choose from.

  8. 8Step 8:

Pick the Paradise Pond card, yank the Monkey’s Tail and become the Wicked Wango King or Queen.

Four things make up the rules: a ladder split into three zones, a die with four outcomes, the Wheel of Mayhem and the Rainbow Rule. Get those down and the rest is easy to follow. For comparisons with other quiz formats, the movie trivia games hub covers film and TV quizzes.

How to play Friends Wicked Wango Quiz: the full rules

Setup

  1. Lay the 7 letter cards F, R, I, E, N, D and S in a row to spell FRIENDS, with a little space between each one. That’s the Ladder of Chance.

  2. Take the Paradise Pond card from the Golden Monkey deck and place it face up at the end of the ladder.

  3. Shuffle the Mud Hut (blue back), Rainbow Ring (red back) and Golden Monkey (yellow back) decks. Place each by its zone as a draw pile, with a discard pile beside it.

  4. Set out the Wheel of Mayhem and the die with their play aid cards, where everyone can see them.

  5. Each player takes a colored dot mover and places it to the left of the F card.

  6. The player with the best wildlife encounter story goes first.

Turn by turn

  • Roll the die

On your turn, roll and check the symbol facing up. You might answer a question, spin the Wheel of Mayhem, take an Angel Pass or play a surprise action.

  • Answer a question

The player to your right draws from the deck for your zone: Mud Hut is easy, Rainbow Ring is medium and Golden Monkey is hard. Your zone is the one behind your mover. Google cards ask an open question, Wicked Wango cards ask higher or lower, and Super Speedy Speed Round cards give you five yes-or-no statements to answer in 30 seconds.

  • Right or wrong

A correct answer lets you keep the card and move forward. A wrong answer sends it to that zone’s discard pile and ends your turn.

  • Angel Passes and surprises

An Angel Pass moves you forward one step, unless the Rainbow Rule blocks you. A surprise depends on your zone: skip a turn in the Mud Hut, swap places and cards with a player in the Rainbow Ring, or spin the wheel to find out how many steps you move back in the Golden Monkey zone.

End of the game and scoring

The first player to pass the Ladder of Chance, reach Paradise Pond and yank the Monkey's Tail becomes Wicked Wango King or Queen. At Paradise Pond, take the top 3 Golden Monkey cards and the Paradise Pond card, shuffle them, then have another player hold them up. Answer a picked question correctly before picking again. Pick the Paradise Pond card to win.

Key rules

  • The Ladder of Chance

F and R make up the Mud Hut zone (easy), I, E and N the Rainbow Ring zone (medium), and D and S the Golden Monkey zone (hard). Jump over the letter cards and land between them.

  • The Rainbow Rule

Before your first jump over D, hand over cards that show all six colors on their backs. Google cards can show two or three colors, while Wicked Wango and Speed Round cards are jokers for any color. Keep won cards on the table with their colors visible.

  • The only free entry

The Rainbow Ring surprise lets you swap places and cards with another player. If the swap puts you in the Golden Monkey zone for the first time, you skip the Rainbow Rule.

  • Oxygen and Backwards

For Oxygen, hold your breath while the question is read. The reader can’t pause for longer than 2 seconds. For Backwards, give the answer in reverse, such as Phoebe as ebeohP. You get one try.

  • Out of Tune

Sing your answer to a well-known song. Each song can be used once per game by all players. Other players can guess the song, and the first to name it correctly steps forward.

  • Unagi Hand Slap

Shout Unagi and point at a player. You’re the slapper, and you try to slap the backs of their hands before they pull away. Their hands start palm down over yours. Hit them and step forward. Miss, and you swap roles and go again.

  • Janice

If you miss a Janice question, another player can yell “Oh my God” in Janice’s voice and try to answer. Right answer: they step forward. Wrong answer: they step back.

  • How You Doin’

Miss a How You Doin’ question, and you can point to a helper. If they get it right, you step forward but don’t keep the card. If they get it wrong, you both step back.

Tips for your first game

  • Keep every question card you win on the table with its color showing. The Rainbow Rule needs all six.
  • Grab Wicked Wango and Speed Round cards when you can. They count as jokers for any color.
  • Use the play aid cards for the die and wheel, so nobody has to argue over a symbol.
  • Backwards gives you one try, so settle on your answer before you start reversing it.

Oxygen lets the reader pause for 2 seconds at most, so take a big breath.

Three wheel challenges come straight from the show, and the game itself goes back to a season 8 episode. The list below matches each reference to its season and episode. For another Friends quiz, read about Friends Scene It?.

Backwards gives you one try. Pick your answer before you reverse it.

The game

  • Design and release

Shuffle, a Cartamundi brand, publishes the game for 2 to 6 players, ages 12+, with a playing time of 30 minutes on its Friends page. The game guide carries a Warner Bros. Entertainment copyright notice with the code (s20).

  • How it fits the line

Shuffle’s Friends page lists the quiz alongside Friends Race to Central Perk, a trivia race for 2 to 4 players. The formats differ: this game uses a ladder of question decks, while the other has a board with standees.

The film or series it covers

Season 8, episode 20, The One with the Baby Shower, plus catchphrases from other seasons.

According to Wikipedia’s episode summary, Joey auditions to host Bamboozled in that episode, while Chandler and Ross help him practice. A 2021 French press report says Cartamundi’s Friends quiz was inspired by that season 8 audition. The challenge names bring in Unagi, Janice and Joey’s pick-up line.
